第一次世界大戰後的20年代，雖然各國經濟均處於低谷，但從殘酷的戰火中倖存下來的人們像是忘記了戰爭給人類帶來的巨大創傷和戰後蕭條、經濟上的不安，狂熱地追求和平的歡樂，過著紙醉金迷的頹廢生活，社交界各種舞會盛行。而且由於電氣和汽車時代的到來，生活節奏的加快，交際舞也在戰前就流行的探戈的基礎上，加上歇斯底里的爵士舞和飛快旋轉的卻爾斯登舞，因此，這個時代也被稱為“瘋狂的20年代”。
長期被封建禮教禁錮的西方女性，一旦衝破牢寵，首先在著裝上矯枉過正．女裝造型走向另一個極端，出現了否定女性特徵，向男裝看齊的奇特現象：女性那高聳的第二特徵——乳房被有意壓平，過去一直強調的纖腰這時被有意放鬆和忽略，衣身的腰線位置被下移到臀圍線附近，豐滿的臀部被束緊，變的細瘦小巧，頭髮也被剪短，裙子越來越短，小腿裸露，整個外形呈一個名副其實的長“管子狀”。為塑造這種過去所不曾有過的嶄新外形，這時出現了用彈性橡膠布製成的直線緊身內衣。由於這種外形很像未成年的少年體型，所以被稱作boyish或school boyi type。
1922年，法國作家Victor Margueritte出版了描寫當代女性的小說《La Garconne》，garconne是指不受任何管束的姑娘，法語中la garconne 是指像男孩子似的。於是，人們便把那些穿短裙，留短髮的職業婦女稱作假小子。在這一時期極為走紅的巴黎著名設計師夏耐爾Gabrielle Chanel就是這樣一位一生為現代職業婦女設計製作“盡可能簡潔樸素的服裝’的女強人。
事實上，gender bender也一直是時尚界最刺激和樂此不疲的遊戲之一。大有“雄兔腳撲朔,雌兔眼迷離;雙兔傍地走,安能辨我是雄雌?”的意境。基因、荷爾蒙、社會環境、成長經歷等決定了我們對性別的生理認知與心理認知，以及社會認知與個體認知。在時尚界，無論是androgyny還是gender bender的風格都是建立在生理認知上的個體認知，unisex與intersex更強調同時適用於兩種性別，沒有衝突矛盾，而社交網路上大熱的transterstic fetishist則屬於另外的戀物範疇。
