Irving Penn ，1917年出生於新澤西，師從Alexey Brodovitc.從畫家到音樂家、演員、哲學家，他拍攝了無數傳奇人物，這位縱橫70年的美國當代攝影大師，隨後自己也成為了傳奇。
Irving Penn最初加入Vogue負責封面插畫，隨後成為Vogue的封面攝影師，並兼顧內頁插畫編輯。在Vogue拍攝期間，Irving Penn逐步探索出自己的獨特風格，尤其擅長構建精巧的三維、二維場景，極大地影響了二戰後人們對時尚攝影的觀念。1953年，Irving Penn建立了自己的商業攝影工作室，很快躋身世界最成功、最具影響力的廣告攝影師行列。
在Irving Penn 2009年辭世之前，曾被喻為肖像攝影史的活化石，92歲高齡在時尚攝影界確實少見，Irving Penn 開創了棚內肖像攝影的新風格。這完全來自于他對於傳統攝影的堅持，那種透徹人心的靈魂捕捉。Irving Penn 喜歡將“攝影棚”帶在身上（這個“攝影棚”實際上就是一張舊的油畫布），走到哪里都在這個特定的背景中按下快門，所以Irving Penn幾乎所有作品都是棚片效果。
