這些照片是由俄羅斯攝影師Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky（1863–1944）拍攝的，他開發了一種早期的彩色照相方法。沙皇尼古拉斯二世委託他穿越俄羅斯帝國，以數千張彩色照片定格自己的疆土和人民。1905-1915年的十年中，沙皇不僅賦予了Sergey穿越帝國的權力，他還資助了這項工作，並為他提供了經過特別改裝的火車車廂，作為暗室。Sergey利用了三個單獨的黑白幀，每個幀都應用了紅色，綠色或藍色濾鏡。將這些幀組合在一起就可以創建全彩色圖像。1918年革命後，Sergey及其家人來到巴黎定居。當他撤離俄羅斯時，他的照片中大約有一半被當局扣留了。其餘的圖像是1948年由國會圖書館從攝影師的繼承人那裡獲得的。
